Mistfall Hunter Cipher NPC — Decipher Locations

Mistfall Hunter Cipher NPC — Decipher Locations

Mistfall Hunter does not have a single NPC named "Cipher" — the word "cipher" appears in the game as an item type and as a verb (Decipher) on camp NPCs. If you are looking for the NPCs who can Decipher ciphers for you, the launch-day community NPC database lists seven camp NPCs with the Decipher interaction: Cazarro, Dramm, Merimo, Mistchaser, Pip, Sigrid and Soekja. This guide summarises what each one does and what we know about the cipher items they accept. Anything not confirmed in official sources is marked awaiting official data.

What a "cipher" actually is

Launch-day community write-ups describe ciphers as clue items that you take to a camp NPC's Decipher interaction to unlock recipes, crafting unlocks, or progression rewards. There is no standalone "cipher" entry in the launch-day community Items database; instead the Ashen Cipher and Abyssal Cipher have appeared as named items in launch-era official mail rewards. The exact mapping between cipher type and the NPC who can decipher it is community-tested, not officially published — the clue-to-NPC mapping is not in official sources.

The Decipher NPCs at camp

The launch-day community NPC database lists these camp NPCs and their interactions.

Ashe — Refine Star Silver, Curio Shop (no Decipher interaction listed).

Cazarro — Shop, Upgrade Shop, Decipher.

Chaska — listed without interaction details (awaiting official data on specific interactions).

Deva — listed without interaction details (awaiting official data).

Dramm — Workshop: Forge, Repair, Upgrade Forge, Loadout Station, Decipher.

Drífa — interaction: "I defeated that black-robed figure." (no Decipher listed).

Merimo — Decipher (only).

Mistchaser — Mistchaser Shop, Decipher.

Pip — Auction, Upgrade Auction House, Pip's Welcoming Gift, Decipher.

Richie — Shop (no Decipher listed).

Sigrid — Victory Wine, Upgrade Tavern, Hand over brewing ingredients, Decipher.

Soekja — Guiding White Crow: Explore, Mailbox, Decipher, Submit Materials.

Stinger — Mistchaser Shop (no Decipher listed).

Twig — Scavenger Squad, Upgrade Scavenger Squad (no Decipher listed).

So seven NPCs have Decipher: Cazarro, Dramm, Merimo, Mistchaser, Pip, Sigrid, Soekja. The other NPCs handle different camp systems (auctions, forging, workshops, taverns).

What the Decipher interaction does

Launch-day community write-ups describe Decipher as the camp station that consumes cipher items in exchange for crafting unlocks, recipes, or progression rewards. The exact reward for each cipher type is not officially published; community trackers note that some rewards are gated behind specific NPCs (for example, Pip's Welcoming Gift is tied to the auction house NPC), while others may be cross-NPC. If you have a cipher item in your inventory and are unsure which NPC to visit, the launch-day item database is the most reliable community-tested reference.

Cipher items confirmed in the launch era

Two cipher items are confirmed in the official August 1 launch mail rewards: Ashen Cipher x1 and Abyssal Cipher x1. Launch-day community tracking confirms both as official launch-era items. Old World Cipher is referenced in some community guides but does not appear in the August 1 mail reward list and has no standalone entry in the Items database — see the Old World Cipher page on this wiki for the current status.

How to find a Decipher NPC in-game

All Decipher NPCs sit inside your camp. Open the map, look for the camp's NPC icons, and any NPC tagged with the Decipher interaction has the station you need. Soekja is the most commonly mentioned starting point because she also handles mailbox and material submission, which puts her near where most players go first. Pip is a fallback if you are already at the auction house. Sigrid is the right NPC if you are visiting the tavern for Victory Wine anyway.

Cipher-to-NPC lookup (community-tested)

The launch-day community has converged on a working cipher-to-NPC mapping based on the clue words that appear on each cipher item. This mapping is community-tested, not officially published by Bellring Games — treat it as a starting point, not a guarantee. If a cipher doesn't match the NPC below, try the other Decipher NPCs in sequence. A separate NPC named Dew (a silver-haired woman near the camp pool) is also listed by some launch-day guides as accepting certain ciphers, including the Old World Cipher.

Why this is not an official mapping. Bellring Games has not published a cipher-to-NPC table. The launch mail reward list confirms only that Ashen Cipher and Abyssal Cipher exist at launch; the rest of the cipher types above are deduced from community testing of clue words and Decipher outcomes. When in doubt, hand the cipher to Pip first (the most flexible Decipher NPC), then Dramm, then Cazarro if neither matches.

What is not confirmed

Three things are explicitly not in official sources reviewed for this page: the exact reward table for each cipher type, the official mapping from cipher to NPC, and the drop rates for cipher items from expeditions. Launch-day community write-ups have theory-craft versions of all three; treat those as community-tested until Bellring Games publishes an official table. (Awaiting official data: any future patch that adds new cipher types, new Decipher NPCs, or publishes the official reward table.)

Camp NPCs without the Decipher interaction

For completeness, the NPCs that handle other camp systems (and do not Decipher ciphers) are Ashe (Refine Star Silver, Curio Shop), Richie (Shop), Stinger (Mistchaser Shop) and Twig (Scavenger Squad, Upgrade Scavenger Squad). Two NPCs are listed without interaction details at all: Chaska and Deva — both are awaiting official data because the launch-day database did not list their interactions in the source reviewed for this page. The remaining NPC, Drífa, has a single interaction: a story dialogue line ("I defeated that black-robed figure.") that is not a Decipher.

How the camp NPC system is organised

Camp NPCs in Mistfall Hunter cluster into functional groups. Auction: Pip (Auction House). Workshop / Forge: Dramm (Forge, Repair, Upgrade Forge, Loadout Station). Tavern: Sigrid (Victory Wine, Upgrade Tavern, hand over brewing ingredients). Curio: Ashe (Refine Star Silver, Curio Shop). Mistchaser shops: Mistchaser, Stinger. Story / exploration: Soekja (Guiding White Crow, Mailbox, Submit Materials), Drífa. Scavenger Squad: Twig. The seven Decipher NPCs (Cazarro, Dramm, Merimo, Mistchaser, Pip, Sigrid, Soekja) often handle other camp systems in parallel, which is why you may end up at one of them for an unrelated reason and discover you can Decipher there too.

How to plan a Decipher visit

Three practical tips. Check your inventory before you travel — Decipher NPCs are all in camp, but visiting one without the right cipher wastes the trip. Talk to the NPC even if you think they do not Decipher — some NPCs reveal new interactions as you progress through camp upgrades or story beats, so the wiki database may lag behind your actual options. Submit Materials to Soekja while you are at the mailbox — she handles both Decipher and material submission, which means one visit can cover both chores.

What to do if you cannot find a Decipher NPC

If you have a cipher item but cannot find a Decipher NPC, two checks. 1. Open your camp map and look for the icon that matches the NPC's interaction tag — every Decipher NPC has the same icon, so a quick sweep shows you where they sit. 2. Visit the NPCs that handle other camp systems first — Pip (Auction), Sigrid (Tavern) and Dramm (Workshop) are the most likely to have a Decipher interaction hidden behind progression, because their primary functions are gated by Level 5 unlocks. If neither check resolves it, the cipher is probably for a future patch or a higher camp upgrade tier.

What is not confirmed

Three things are explicitly not in official sources reviewed for this page: Chaska's and Deva's interactions (awaiting official data), the official mapping from cipher type to Decipher NPC, and the reward table for each cipher type. Treat all of these as awaiting official data until Bellring Games publishes official data.
